Samarjit Lankesh, the son of director Indrajit Lankesh and the grandson of writer-filmmaker P Lankesh, is gearing up to make his debut in Kannada cinema with the film "Gowri." This movie, which also introduces Saanya Iyer to Kannada cinema, is set to be released on August 15. In an interview with Bangalore Times, Samarjit shares his passion for the film industry, the challenges he encountered as a newcomer, and his experience of collaborating with his father.
Samarjit expresses his fascination with the world of cinema: "I was captivated by the enchantment of the silver screen, particularly by the movies of Appu sir (Puneeth Rajkumar) and Sudeep sir at a young age, which motivated me to pursue acting. Interested in various aspects of filmmaking, I honed my skills at the New York Film Academy, delving into camera work, acting, and creating short films with friends. This experience boosted my confidence to enter the Kannada film sector. Engaging in theatre, assisting director Yogaraj Bhat on several projects, learning stunts from Chethan Dsouza, and dancing under Murali master for two years all contributed to my performance in 'Gowri.'"
Transitioning from a child artist to a lead actor brought a heightened sense of responsibility for Samarjit. He embraced this challenge with dedication and sincerity. "This film serves as a platform to demonstrate my versatility as an actor," says Samarjit.
Portraying the lead role in "Gowri" presented unique challenges for Samarjit. "It was a process to embody the character fully, as it possesses various layers. I had to master the Mandya Kannada dialect by studying Ambareesh and Darshan's films to capture the accent, an essential element of the movie. The role also required me to perform dance and stunt sequences, which..."“Making Gowri the ideal platform to showcase my acting skills was my goal,” Samarjit expresses. Reflecting on the challenges he encountered as a newcomer, he explains, “Despite having prior experience as a child actor, stepping into a leading role brought forth a greater sense of responsibility. This motivated me to work diligently and approach the role with unwavering dedication.” Describing his professional dynamic with his father, director Indrajit Lankesh, on the set of Gowri, Samarjit reflects, "While my dad and I share a friendly relationship outside of work, on the movie set, he assumed the role of director while I focused solely on my acting responsibilities. Our mutual commitment to fulfilling the demands of the film meant approaching our work with passion and dedication each day."
